New Goals

Funny how life's path can change directions at any given time. Last autumn, I made this list for myself:

Tuesday, September 02, 2008

Finding the Balance

One Year Goals:

  • GMAT (currently doing this, estimated time taken November 2008)
  • GRE (I haven't yet factored this in. Study December till February?)
  • PHR certification (June 2009). Study February til June.
  • Look into CA PHR.
  • solidify HR career path.
  • Join P I H R A OC.
  • Hobbies:
    • take dessert classes (currently doing this once a week)
  • HR Grad School (aim) start date: Fall 2010? Meaning applications next year.
  • Do I want to move?

****

Now, I only consider three of those things on the list. I remember very vividly one of my first long lifetime "goal" lists that I wrote for my Leadership/Government Class in the 7th grade. My teacher had us write out 100 lifetime goals. Included was short-term and long-term goals. And I'm happy to say that I'm on the verge of achieving many of those same goals I wrote as a 12 year-old. There's a study saying that people who write down the goals are more likely to achieve them... and I think it's true... I'm a total list person, and I like seeing things being crossed off. I even crossed off my 7th grade goal of "being Mulan at Disneyland" last year. I got to wear the wig, makeup, and everything last year after I graduated college. It was beyond awesome. :)

Since life changed its course - I now have a career in Marketing instead of HR, working at an engineering firm. Aside from all the career goals, I'm also happy of where I am in general. Great and happy relationship with the boyfriend, watching my little nephew grow up to be the funniest kid, and just growing up. I love my friends, have learned so many things regarding relationships with people (and have yet so much more!), and am still working on being a better person.

Side story about my funny 1.5 year old nephew:
It's hard to bathe him because he keeps squirming and goofing around, and it's especially hard to bathe his little butt because he keeps clenching his buttcheeks. So my parents started saying in Vietnamese, "Ngoi xuong! Rua dit!" which means "Sit down! Wash your butt!" and he would squat down (fob-style) to position himself to... exactly what it's meant to. Anyway, my sister wanted to show me the little tricks that Jason can do (he does all this other funny stuff)... so in the kitchen, she calls out "Ngoi xuong! Rua dit!"... and then little Jason automatically squats no matter he's doing (eating, drinking, laughing..). And she kept repeating it... and he kept following order. It's the cutest little thing for a baby.

Anyway, my new short-term goals :)

  • Complete MBA with concentration in Marketing by June 2012 (I can actually accelerate and graduate by December 2011... but we'll see.)
  • In two years, get CPSM certification (this is for the A/E/C industry... architecture/engineering/construction)
  • Look into getting a house
  • Learn Spanish (while Scotty is learning Vietnamese... i think spanish is a lot easier to learn than Vietnamese though! I applaud the boyfriend. haha)
  • Start a business within one or two years
  • Do a 5k without dying like I did a couple months ago. I can do cardio for miles, but I can't run worth crap because I don't know how to breathe. I keep blaming it on my singing... I breathe from a different area when I sing and I think i use the same type of breathing... but whatever, I just suck!
  • Go to Alaska, Vietnam, Washington, or Hawaii
  • Work so I can be an awesome housemom in the future. =)

Bedtime now. End transmission!

Inventions

I am looking for an ergonomic laptop keyboard.. anyone know of one?

I'll be starting my MBA program at UCI in the fall.. and a laptop is required, so I'm looking into some of these choices:

  • a Macbook. perhaps it will be a lot easier to use InDesign and other design programs on it for work purposes too..
  • Sony VAIO CS series.. mini and portable cuz i hate lugging around heavy things
  • Dell Minibook... Scott already has his mind on it but I hate Dell products..
  • Another HP... I've owned 4 HP computers/laptop and 4 HP printers! It's a good brand. We'll see, I'm up for a change... suchas:
  • HP Mini 1000 Vivienne Tam.. 10 inch screen... have to see it does the job though.
  • HP TouchSmart tx2z... would be great for class note taking.

I'm really leaning towards a Mac! But I need my ergonomics... probably have to lug around an extra keyboard for document typing..

Break from baking

So I came to a conclusion last month that I am going to stop baking often, and only do it every once in a while for an occasion or when I feel like it. I started doing it more often because I wanted to explore and see what I can do. It was fun nonetheless, and the boundaries are endless, and I can probably make a lot more things. I was to make a two tier wedding cake last month, but instead I made a tshirt cake for my work. For Christmas I went totally Martha Stewart and had as many dessert dishes as I did main + side dishes (inevitably resulting in a huge surplus of food).

Why stop? Because baking requires me to taste-test frosting and the cake, etc. That was piled on top of a busy schedule, so the end result was me slowly gaining weight. I'm also trying to cook (real food) more often, and I'd much rather eat the real food. I'm definitely going to be one of those mamas with a cookie jar with fresh cookies/brownies and make cakes for my kids. And then I'll slap their hand when they aren't supposed to be eating cookies before dinner time.

I thought the other day, someone was genius to pair up milk and cookies. Or all the genius parents who made incentives for kids. Milk and cookies... not only tastes good, but it gets kids to drink milk! Tooth Fairy... gets kids excited to pull out their teeth! The American positive reinforcement reward system... gotta admit, it works sometimes. Eh, it's just called bribery isn't it. =)

Turn off the TV

I'm taking my GMAT tomorrow and I'm scared shitless. Well, not really. I'm just really really nervous because honestly I am not asian enough, I don't have enough math brain power. I am envious of the many people who are naturally math whiz's. Give me a song to sing or make me learn theories of music and I'll be more happy with that. I have too many quadratic equations and geometry rules and number properties and prepositional phrases and idioms in my head right now. I get to unload them all tomorrow! weee! I'll probably retake it to see if I can get a higher score. But here goes nuttin!

I love dorking out and debating with my bf about the stupid stuff we try to logically lay out. It's fun.

Anyhow. I'm happy. Maybe it's because I don't watch TV. But then, after tomorrow night, I will have much more time to kill and do stuff like watch TV. I always result to sleep, baking, learning something new, catching up with friends, or somethng more fun than glueing myself to the tube.

That's my rant. I'm waiting at home like an excited kid for her toy. Well, I am. My new computer is coming!!

James Kim - CNET

When it starts to get cold, or when I'm freezing my butt off, I often think about James Kim, the CNET guy who tragically passed away while stranded in snow, in an effort to save his family. I think about how intelligent James Kim and his wife were, and the array of smart survival things they did before they were eventually found. I think... would I be able to do those things? Do I have enough survival skills in case of an extraordinary situation?

I think his story is going to be one that I'll remember for a very long time. I mean, I was super excited when I had my duracell compass when I went camping last year.. just in case I had to use it. We got into a car accident on the mountain but that obviously didn't call for a compass.

I want to learn things such as making a fire without a match (all I know is dry wood, rock, and friction... there's gotta be more tricks), tie all those fancy ropes, build structures, etc. I was never in scouts or whatever, I wish I did join!

Anyways, I think James Kim was heroic, intelligent, honorable for being what he was to his family, etc.I know there are many people who deserve recognition as well, but I thought I'd give me two cents on him tonight before going to bed.
